AF-EMDR Community

We aim to establish a lively AF-EMDR community in Singapore, characterized by regular gatherings throughout the year. These events will feature guest speakers, interactive discussions, and opportunities for fellowship and enjoyment, ensuring a well-rounded and engaging experience for all participants.

Our First Gathering:

  • We are holding our first AF-EMDR on 23 March (Sat), 4 pm to 6 pm.

  • During the event, this is a good time to mingle & reconnect. Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided.

  • Dr Yvonne Lek will be sharing her research, too.

  • Each participant will receive a certificate of attendance.

Attachment-Focused EMDR with Singaporean clients: Cultural issues, adaptations, and helpful strategies.

In this presentation, Dr. Yvonne Lek will describe key features of Singaporean society that contribute to challenges in the treatment process, such as affect avoidance, shame, and limited verbal expression. She will describe how she has employed Attachment-Focused EMDR in treating her clients to develop safety and increase emotional capacity, as well as how she has used it to repair developmental wounding and process traumas. She will discuss modifications, including the use of art, to meet the cultural needs of Singaporeans, which will be illustrated in the case studies.

  • Describe cultural issues that contribute to psychopathology and treatment considerations.

  • Identify modifications and adaptations to EMDR to meet the cultural and emotional needs of Singaporean clients

  • Describe methods for building psychological safety and increasing capacity for emotional regulation using sensory techniques, as well as the use of alternative mediums (e.g. art) in the treatment process.

About Dr. Yvonne Lek

Yvonne was trained as an educator and taught for a number of years before joining MOE as a Guidance Officer. In her work as a Guidance Officer, she played a key role in pioneering the development of the MOE’s Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Framework for schools. Yvonne also reviewed and enhanced the professional development programmes for teachers in areas pertaining to career guidance and psychological well-being. Yvonne has fifteen years of clinical experience, working extensively on mental health issues with students both in local and international schools.

Yvonne firmly believes that each child has a voice. She counts it as a blessing to be able to hear and connect with each voice and to support each child in his/her journey of growth. During her free time, Yvonne enjoys long walks and a good meal with friends and family.
